Built in 1913 as a navigational aid for commercial shipping between Hawaii and the Orient, Kilauea Lighthouse stands as a monument to Hawaii's colorful past. For 62 years it guided ships and boats safely along Kaua`i's rugged north shore. In 1927, the Kilauea light played a key role in the first trans-Pacific flight from the west coast to Honolulu by reorienting the two lost pilots of the Bird of Paradise. In 1976, the Coast Guard deactivated the Kilauea lighthouse and replaced it with an automated beacon. In 1979 the lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
